How to Take Product Photos With a Phone for AI Editing

Start with a source photo the AI can understand

AI editing can improve presentation, but it cannot recover reliable product detail that was never captured. Begin with a sharp image, a clean lens, and enough light to show the real colour, texture, label, and edges of the item. Use the main phone camera rather than digital zoom, and move closer if the product is too small in the frame.

Place the product near a large window or another soft light source. Turn off mixed yellow and white room lights when they create conflicting colour casts. A plain wall, foam board, paper sweep, or uncluttered table makes the subject easier to separate from the background.

Capture a small, useful set

Take more than one angle before editing. A practical product set often includes a straight hero view, a side or back view, one detail image, and one scale or context image. Keep the camera height and distance similar when the images will appear together in a store grid.

  • Keep the entire product visible: Avoid cutting off handles, corners, packaging, or shadows you want to preserve.
  • Lock focus on the product: Tap the most important detail before taking the photo.
  • Leave some space around the subject: This gives the editor room to adjust presentation or crop.
  • Avoid heavy phone filters: Start from a neutral source so colour changes are easier to judge.

Choose one editing goal

A precise goal is easier to review than a vague request to make the image better. Decide whether you need cleaner lighting, a simpler background, stronger separation from the backdrop, or a consistent catalog look. If several changes matter, describe them in priority order.

For example: Keep the bottle, label, cap, proportions, and colour unchanged. Create a clean light-grey studio background, soft shadow beneath the product, balanced neutral lighting, and a centred marketplace composition.

Use the AI product photo editor for a preset-led workflow, or open the single-image editor to test one real photo before signup.

Review product accuracy before publishing

Generative editing can reinterpret small details. Compare the result side by side with the original at full size. Check labels, spelling, ports, buttons, stitching, jewellery settings, packaging quantities, colour, material texture, and any feature a customer uses to judge the item.

Reject or regenerate an image when the result invents a feature, hides damage, changes the product variant, or makes the item look materially different from what will be delivered. AI output is a draft for review, not proof that a listing is accurate or compliant.

Prepare a consistent catalog batch

Group images with a similar subject, crop, and lighting problem. Apply one clear direction to a small test set first. Once the direction works, Premium can apply it across a batch of up to 30 images. Mixing jewellery, clothing, furniture, and packaged goods in one batch usually requires compromises because each category benefits from different framing and detail checks.

Product photo checklist

  • The product is sharp and fully visible in the original.
  • The edited colour matches the physical item.
  • Labels and functional details remain correct.
  • The crop still works at mobile thumbnail size.
  • Background and shadow treatment are consistent across related items.
  • The final file meets the current rules of the marketplace where it will be uploaded.

When you are ready, review the Shopify workflow, see the Amazon listing workflow, or try one product photo.
